Pessary care
A pessary is a prosthetic device in the shape of a ring, cube, or disc that is inserted into a woman’s vagina to support pelvic organ prolapse—a condition affecting about 40% of women over the age of 50. A pessary can also help manage urinary incontinence.
There are several different models available, varying in size. A pessary is prescribed by a doctor to ensure the best model is chosen to suit the patient’s needs.
Care
The pessary should be removed for cleaning every 1 to 2 months. The frequency may vary and can be recommended by the doctor, physiotherapist, or nurse. Cleaning is done with mild soap followed by rinsing.
It must then be reinserted using a lubricating gel, which sometimes contains ingredients that help prevent bacterial growth. A certain level of dexterity is required to remove and reinsert the pessary, which is why this procedure is often performed by a healthcare professional.
However, some individuals are able to perform the necessary care themselves at home.
At NIOS Clinic, we can assist you with pessary care or provide you with the necessary guidance so you feel comfortable performing the procedure at home. We prioritize a personalized approach tailored to your needs, ensuring the examination is conducted with respect and in a climate of trust.
