Desensitization to allergies
Desensitization, also known as immunotherapy, is a technique that involves administering a predetermined amount of an allergen (such as pollens, ragweed, grasses, dust mites, cats, or molds), with gradually increasing doses until reaching a maximum maintenance dose. The goal of this intervention is to reduce allergic symptoms (such as asthma or rhinitis) caused by the specific allergen.
By gradually and regularly exposing the immune system to the problematic allergen, the body develops a certain level of tolerance, which in turn reduces the associated signs and symptoms of allergies.
The benefits of desensitization include not only a noticeable reduction in allergy symptoms, but also a decreased need for medications used to treat those symptoms. Additionally, the positive effects of desensitization often persist long-term, even after the treatment has ended.
The products used for desensitization gradually acclimate the immune system to the allergen in small amounts. Direct exposure to the allergen, on the other hand, exposes the immune system to high concentrations of allergens in a very short time.
