Therapeutic phlebotomy
(bloodletting)
Phlebotomy, also known as bloodletting, is a medical procedure performed by our nurses that involves removing a significant amount of blood to reduce serum ferritin levels as well as hematocrit or hemoglobin levels. There are two well-known conditions that require this type of intervention: hemochromatosis and polycythemia vera.
Phlebotomy is a procedure that may be required throughout the lifetime of affected individuals, as it helps prevent certain liver complications and significantly improves their quality of life.
Our specimen collection room is perfectly suited for this type of procedure, as you will need to remain on site for at least 60 minutes to complete the phlebotomy and for the necessary post-procedure monitoring. You’ll be seated comfortably in our collection chairs, with a television available for your enjoyment.
